Der Stand von Gaza

PA Education Ministry: Israel impeding entry of 300,000 textbooks into Gaza - The Palestinian Ministry of Education said in a statement on Saturday that Israeli authorities have been impeding entry of 300,000 textbooks from the occupied West Bank into the blockaded Gaza Strip, jeopardizing the new school year in the coastal enclave, which is set to begin on Sunday.

The ministry approved a new curriculum for grades 1 through 4 and distributed the new textbooks to all schools in the occupied West Bank, while most textbooks for Gaza were printed in presses located in the Gaza Strip itself.

However, 30,000 math and science textbooks bound for Gaza were printed in the West Bank, “which Israel has so far denied entry to the Gaza Strip,” Basri Salih, undersecretary for planning and development, said.

He said that the ministry arranged the shipment of the 300,000 textbooks with the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). >>>

Unarmed Palestinian running towards IDF guard post shot dead - Yoav Zitun, Elisha Ben Kimon & Elior Levy - A Palestinian man came running at a West Bank guard post near Ofra; the soldiers followed the procedure for stopping a suspicious person and ended up shooting him; he died at the scene; no weapons or explosives were found on his person; none of the soldiers were injured >>>

Israel’s war on open discourse: State censorship now reaches into international news sources and social media - David Palumbo -Liu-Since the beginning of this year, Israel’s attempts to control what people can read and write within the country and in occupied Palestinian territories have increased, reaching into new areas in ways that are of concern. >>>

Water shortages hit West Bank Palestinians, provoking war of words - Sabreen Taha - At the peak of a searing summer, Palestinians living in parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank are suffering from severe water shortages, prompting a war of words between Palestinian and Israeli officials over who is responsible. The Palestinians say Israel is preventing them from accessing adequate water at an affordable price, and point out that nearby Israeli settlements have plentiful water supplies. Israel says the Palestinians have been allocated double the amount they were due under an interim 1995 agreement, and have refused to discuss solutions to the current problem >>>

Democracy’ and ‘terrorism’ and the parameters of thinkable thought - Thomas S. Harrington - It is an experience I have had time and again over the years not only with Zionists, but their ideological first cousins, American Exceptionalists. Think of it as a form of tactical retreat designed to prevent the further exposure of what spies sometimes refer to as “sources and methods.” >>>

Declassified: How Israel Misled the U.S. About Its Nuclear Program - Ofer Aderet - Fifty U.S. documents from the early 1960s were declassified by the U.S. National Security Archive on Thursday, shedding light on Israel’s attempts to hide one of its best-kept secrets to this day: details on its nuclear program. The Americans ultimately believed the Israelis were providing “untruthful cover” about intentions to build a bomb. The documents include papers from the White House, the State Department, the Atomic Energy Commission and U.S. intelligence agencies. The editors are Avner Cohen, a professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and William Burr, the head of nuclear affairs documentation at the National Security Archive, which is based at George Washington University in the capital. >>>

If Israel’s Occupation Is Permanent, Why Isn’t It the Same as Apartheid? - Jay Michaelson - Apartheid. The word is thrown around on the left-wing side of Israel-Palestine politics these days, and often it seems intended to provoke outrage, not reflection. And indeed, that’s exactly what it does on the right. But with the news on August 22 that only 58% of Israelis still support a two-state solution (and that’s counting those who support it in principle but not in practice), it might be worth taking a closer look. >>>
